What Are Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)?

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), also known as an adjustable or variable speed drive, is an electronic controller used to regulate the speed and torque of AC motors by adjusting the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. VFDs are central to modern industrial automation because they improve energy efficiency, reduce wear on mechanical systems, and enable precise process control. They are widely applied in pumps, fans, conveyors, HVAC systems, and other equipment where variable motor speed provides performance and cost advantages. When selecting a VFD, engineers typically consider the motor type (often AC induction), power rating, operating environment, and the level of programmability or communication required for system integration (EtherCat, Modbus, CAN, etc). Beyond efficiency, VFDs also contribute to sustainability efforts by lowering energy consumption in facilities worldwide. However, proper selection and installation are important, as issues such as harmonic distortion or motor insulation stress can arise if drives are mismatched with their applications.
