DisplayPort Overview Slide 9
DVI/HDMI level shifters are used in motherboards for desktop and laptop computers. The chipset inside supports a DisplayPort output and hence there is a need for a level shifter chip on the motherboard which can allow DVI or HDMI connector support. Note that this is possible because of the dual-standard or DP++ DisplayPort supported by the chipset. The level shifter chip will just do a “dumb” voltage level translation and is transparent to the data. Similarly, one level shifter is required for a docking station which supports a DVI or HDMI output. The level shifter solution is also used in dongle adapters for connecting a DisplayPort output from a computer to a DVI monitor. However, a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter dongle would require a special solution.
